What do I need to practise Yoga?

Yoga truly is accessible to everyone whether young or old, in good health or infirm; there are many ways the practice can be modified to make it suitable for everybody. If you’re thinking about starting out you might be wondering what you actually need to practice Yoga? Here are my recommendations:

Yoga mat

A Yoga mat is really the only piece of equipment you absolutely need to practice Yoga. It provides cushioning on a hard floor and a non-slip surface for standing.

There are plenty of different mat options on the market with the main considerations when investing in one being thickness, composition and durability (and if you’re like me - what colour it is!). A mat doesn’t have to be expensive and there are plenty of good options for anyone getting started out. My top recommendations are:

Yoga Matters for mats that are durable and affordable, used in studios around the world.

Lifeforme mats are the Rolls Royce of Yoga mats, great grip and come with lines of alignment to really help you nail that pose.

Clothing

Yoga class isn’t a fashion parade; it’s about being present in the moment. Tank tops, shorts, capris and leggings are all great for ladies, along with a supportive sports bra and a t-shirt or vest that is either slim fitting or can be tucked in. There are some asana (Yoga poses) where a loose fitting garment may slide up the body exposing your midriff and so to avoid this ensure your top isn’t too loose.

For men, shorts (length varies on taste) and a slim fit T-shirt or vest work well.

If you are practicing a more physical form of Yoga, wear clothing that wicks away sweat that sits close to the skin, there are lots of gorgeous materials out there that feel great, are light to wear and environmentally friendly.

For slower classes where you aren’t going to sweat so much take an extra layer for warmth, which can be removed or added as needed. Cotton and other fabrics which aren’t so good as wicking away sweat are fine for these classes.

My recommendation is to wear something you feel comfortable in. And, if you decide to practice Yoga regularly, invest in clothing that enables you to move yet is comfortable. My favourite brands are:

Skimmed Milk for lighter than light leggings and sports bras made from recycled materials and with moisture wicking properties. A small UK based company whose sports clothing comes in some beautiful bright colours. Look out for their 20% discount on your first order.

Bamboo Clothing for super comfortable, ethical and environmentally friendly sports clothing. Send them an email and the CEO and founder often replies personally!

Sweatty Betty for ‘on trend’ clothing that performs well in the Yoga class.

Most importantly, clothes should be clean and fresh, fit properly and be functional.

And that’s literally all you need for your Yoga practice!
